Chalchuapa: Santa Ana Oeste

Explore ancient Mayan structures, including a ball court and temples, at Tazumal Archaeological Park in Chalchuapa.

Tazumal hosted a significant and sophisticated Mayan settlement from 100 to 1200 AD. After this lengthy occupation, the site was abandoned around 1200 AD and now offers a treasure trove of history.

Structure 1 stands as the primary attraction, standing 24 meters high with 13 phases of construction that date from 100 to 800 AD. The main building is a large rectangular structure built in the Mayan style and crowned with a temple. Thirteen construction phases created concentric levels, with the uppermost featuring the pyramid, Mayan ball court, and a complex water drainage system.

One of the most important structures on the site is the Tazumal Stela, a monument measuring 2.65 meters tall and 1.16 meters wide.
