La Libertad Costa
San Blas is one of the most beautiful beaches in El Salvador, with incredible potential as a premier tourism destination and surfing spot.
Just 3 kilometers to the west of Puerto de La Libertad and nearly at the foot of the modern Highway to Surf City bypass, this coastal jewel boasts a long 1-km beach and every amenity travelers could desire.
Four distinct surfable waves await, delivering options to satisfy skill levels from beginner to expert. The first wave, known as El Recodo, is located at the eastern end of the beach. It's produced by a rocky formation at the mouth of a small river, which generates a short wave that is steep, fast, and includes barrel sections.
To the west, another rocky outcrop produces two waves: one peels gently to the right, offering a mellow wave and smooth ride; the other breaks left and is faster and more demanding. Access this section at high tide, to avoid the jagged rocks that emerge at low tide.
The next wave is a left-hand break, unusual for this "right wave paradise." This wave is generated by the combination of a rocky area and the remains of the San Blas merchant ship, which ran aground in 1901. This can be an incredibly powerful, world-class wave, with walls up to 6 feet (2 meters), long lines and barrel sections for expert surfers.
From that spot and up to the edge of El Majahual beach to the west, there is a wide beach break formed by sand banks that produce a variety of waves: some are fast and tubular, perfect for bodysurfing, while others are foamy and mellow, ideal for beginner surfers.
Two surf schools operate in San Blas, where you can rent boards affordably.
The beach offers many attractions, starting with its pristine, clean and safe environment. The water's edge is lined with private rental properties, beach clubs, palm shelters, and various lodging options. There are also public areas for visitors to park and access the beach, making this an accessible paradise for everyone.
The expansive stretch of black volcanic sand is perfect for setting up an umbrella and soaking up a perfect beach day. Walking, running, playing soccer or volleyball, sunbathing or taking a dip in the ocean are all irresistible pursuits at this beach.
Visitors can also enjoy birdwatching, and nesting sea turtles are a magical sight.
If you are going to San Blas from San Salvador, start down the road to Puerto de La Libertad, take the Highway to Surf City bypass, and then the coastal highway going west. At the mile marker 39½, you'll find a paved road heading directly to San Blas.
