Discover this impressive artificial lake in El Salvador!

Suchitlán Lake serves as the man-made reservoir to power a hydroelectric dam and provide a stable water source. It was created from 1973 to 1976 with the construction of the Cerrón Grande Hydroelectric Station.

Despite being artificial, it powers El Salvador's largest electricity generator. It has also emerged as a major tourism draw for the region. Visitors flock to the lake for fishing, boat rides, or kayaking.

The lake was named by Alejandro Cotto, one of the local cultural leaders, combining the town of Suchitoto with the department of Cuscatlán. This engineering marvel spans three departments of the country: Chalatenango, Cuscatlán, and Cabañas.

To explore the scenic areas around the lake, charter a boat to visit hidden islands. Some gems include Bird Island, Lovers Island, El Chaparral, Hermit's Island, and others. Don't miss out on this fantastic landscape.
