Usulután Norte

This charming town is home to some of the country's finest coffee, which you can sample in different cafés and boutiques, each with its own distinctive architecture and decor.

Mild climate, natural beauty, and picturesque charm make Alegría a contemplative stop worth experiencing. The journey to town previews the natural richness, with stunning roadside landscapes.

Alegría is the birthplace of several outstanding figures in Salvadoran history, including educator and writer Alberto Masferrer (1868-1932), one of the country's most emblematic public figures. He was a philosopher, journalist, essayist, poet and politician. Another notable public figure linked to the town is Manuel Enrique Araujo, president of El Salvador from 1911 to 1913, baptized in the local church when the town was still known as Tecapa, on October 22, 1865.

Religious devotion runs deep in Alegría, with its colonial-era Church of San Pedro Apóstol. Visitors during Holy Week can experience the town's streets coming alive with elaborate carpets of colored sawdust and flowers, marking the path of the Holy Burial procession.

Visit Alegría's craft shops for items made from wood and coffee-tree roots. Take an ornamental plant from the charming plant nurseries.
