Santa Ana Oeste

Test your endurance on this challenging hike up Ilamatepec Volcano, also known as the Santa Ana Volcano. Those who reach the summit enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding hills, and the stunning turquoise waters of Coatepeque Lake in the distance.

Located in the department of Santa Ana, this towering peak rises 2,381 meters above sea level, making it El Salvador's tallest volcano. The most recent eruption was in 2005.

Ilamatepec is part of the Los Volcanes complex in the Apaneca mountain range, a tropical cloud forest and coffee-producing region 65 kilometers to the west of the capital city.

Even the journey to this agricultural and tourism region rewards visitors, with lush landscapes along the highway dotted with stands selling fresh local tropical fruit.

As the road starts to climb up the volcano, the flora and fauna become exceptionally rich, with a cool climate providing welcome relief from tropical heat.

This hike suits intermediate hikers, though weather conditions can vary. Come prepared with comfortable clothing and bring water, sunglasses, sunblock, a hat, and good hiking shoes.

Admission to the Volcano Complex is $1.50 for Salvadorans and $3.00 for foreigners.

Children under the age of 6 and adults over 60 get in free.

The park is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
