Chalchuapa: Santa Ana Oeste

Explore Mayan civilization, traditional indigo dyeing, and El Salvador's rich historical heritage. At Casa Blanca you will discover a pre-Hispanic ceremonial center with varied mounds and structures, immersing you in the mystical atmosphere of ancient history surrounded by nature.

Make sure to visit the museum, built in the architectural style of the old colonial plantation houses, with large corridors surrounding a pleasant central courtyard. The construction is mud brick and clay tile, a perfect setting for memorable photographs.

The museum exhibit houses the only known stela with Mayan script in El Salvador. Only a fragment remains; researchers believe that most of the text was intentionally erased in El Salvador's pre-Hispanic past.

This site includes an archaeological window revealing a series of natural and cultural layers, including a layer of white volcanic ash deposited by the great eruption of the Ilopango Volcano (5th century AD).

No visit to Casa Blanca is complete without exploring the indigo workshop. There you can see the different methods and materials in this color dyeing process for shirts, handbags, and other indigo blue items. You may have the opportunity to witness the process in action and watch how skilled artisans mix the natural dye in traditional basins, and immerse the garments using various techniques.
