Cuscatlán Norte

Suchitoto, just 47 kilometers from the capital city, is a must-see destination on any trip to El Salvador. This cultural gem boasts invaluable heritage and historical significance alongside stunning natural beauty and spectacular views that honor its name that means "Place of Birds and Flowers" in the Nahuat language.

If you're looking for history, this was the site of the country's first capital city in 1528, and the area's nature as a commercial hub is still visible, though today the region thrives as a tourism destination filled with hostels, restaurants, and charming cafés that give visitors a sense of what life was like in colonial times.

Architectural treasures await around every corner in Suchitoto. A stroll down the town's cobblestone streets will take you past clay-tiled roofs, beautiful wrought iron window bars, picturesque homes and doors that transport you into the past. You will also find cultural centers, art galleries, museums, craft sales, community development spaces, and other treasures.

Suchitoto hosts several important cultural events every year, including the International Arts and Culture Festival held every February, the Suchitoto International Film Festival each year in November, and the Corn Festival every August.

With so much to see and do, a single day trip won't suffice to discover all of Suchitoto's charms. Consider spending the night to experience the traditional evening atmosphere in the local boutique restaurants, cafes, or bars. Hospitality options range from hostels to hotels, to suit various budgets and preferences.
