Metapán: Santa Ana Norte
The natural beauty, ancient archaeological sites, and rich legends of Güija Lake will captivate you.
This lake is shared between El Salvador and Guatemala. Abundant pre-Columbian ceramics have been discovered on the islands of Teotipa, Tule, and Iguatepec on the Salvadoran side.
From the small islands in the lake's center, you'll enjoy views of the vibrant green of the abundant surrounding vegetation, including nance trees, cedars, volador, mahogany, granadillo, natural rubber, and chichipince. This ideal habitat offers chances to spot quetzals or mockingbirds, along with numerous lizards and snakes, including pythons and vipers. It's best to explore with a local guide.
Birdwatching and hiking await visitors at the San Diego La Barra Natural Protected Area. Other activities include rafting, kayaking, sailing, or fishing along the Guajoyo River that feeds into the lake.
