Metapán: Santa Ana Norte

Montecristo is a unique cloud forest that will envelop you in its natural magic in the midst of pine, cypress and oak stands and abundant flowers. This national forest in Metapán is a great spot for anyone looking for nature, adventure, and cool mild weather, with temperatures ranging from 6° to 18° Celsius depending on the time and season. The crisp air and peaceful sounds create an irresistible retreat.

The park also operates as an interpretative center to share the area's history through antique items and information on the animals living in the park. The adventure begins at the trailhead for a hike up to a waterfall with cold crystal-clear waters. Cross the suspension bridges for an adrenaline rush!

Montecristo is part of the Three-Country Cross Border Biosphere Reserve and was the first declared natural protected area in El Salvador. The summit is shared by three countries: El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.

The park features camping areas, cabins, soccer fields, and hiking trails leading up to scenic lookouts, rivers, and the 100-year garden featuring diverse species of ancient plants, ferns, and orchids. One of the main attractions is the "tree of love," a fascinating natural fusion of two trees that is an enchanting spot for romantic moments, and an ideal setting to spot the elusive quetzal bird.

Montecristo is home to boars, rufous-backed wrens, deer, mountain lions, agouti, and other wild fauna.

Entrance hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., cabins are open starting at noon, and departure from Montecristo back to Metapán is at 3:00 p.m.
