Jicalapa: La Libertad Costa
The Taquillo beach complex is a pristine natural protected area located in La Libertad Costa municipality, La Libertad department.
This region protects the largest expanse of deciduous forest, which transitions to lusher vegetation along the cliffs overlooking the ocean.
This area showcases remarkable biodiversity, including the elusive Aztec snail, known locally as the jute teñidor or dye snail, prized for its milky secretions used as natural dye. These waters are also home to the endangered purple snail.
The best known beach in the area is Shalpa, a small, unspoiled natural paradise that captivates visitors with its remote location, rocky reefs, and lush vegetation.
Shalpa is a unique beach on the Salvadoran coast. Towering rock formations provide spectacular views, while the dark sands contrast with the rocks emerging from the shoreline. Hidden saltwater pools await exploration at low tide.
Gentle waves typically caress this shore. While it's not a surfing destination, the tides and swell at Shalpa can offer good bodysurfing or SUP sessions on tranquil waters surrounded by stunning natural beauty.
Camping permits can be requested from the Ministry of the Environment for an unforgettable stay at this spot.
Taquillo stands out as an exceptional location for ecotourism; it feels like discovering a forgotten paradise. This secluded feeling means that there are few services available onsite. However, its proximity to other more highly-developed beaches and Puerto de La Libertad just 25 kilometers away makes resupplying easy with a quick trip back to civilization.
The site's natural beauty and serenity have drawn growing accommodation options.
To get there from San Salvador, take the highway to Puerto de La Libertad and then the Road to Surf City Bypass, continuing west along the coastal highway. After the first tunnel, keep an eye out for the signs for Taquillo; take a right turn into town or head directly to the coast. The last section of road to the beach is a dirt and rock path that may require 4-wheel drive.
