The Bell Tower church of Nuestra Señora de la Merced is known for being the place where the First shout of Independence was raised on November 5, 1811. Located in the tourist rings in the center of San Salvador, in the well-known “street of bitterness ”. By legislative decree, the bell tower of Nuestra Señora de La Merced is a national monument and belongs to the cultural assets of El Salvador. The Church has its origins from the year 1623. Due to the earthquakes of 1854 and 1873, work was done on its reconstruction, which was completed in 1895. In the 20th century it has also undergone remodeling over time. Also due to earthquake causes occurring in 1917, the parish suffered damage to its infrastructure, as well as the earthquake that occurred in San Salvador in 1986. In 1995, an architectural restoration of the The Tower church of La Señora de La Merced was carried out. The last restoration of the bell tower and the Church on its facade was in 2011 by the Ministry of Culture at that time, due to the 200th anniversary of the First Shout of Independence.
