Within the urban area of the capital, La Laguna Botanical Garden is a natural island of peace where you can disconnect from the hectic routine of the city. This unique place is located at the bottom of an extinct volcanic crater (caldera) in the municipality of Antiguo Cuscatlan, La Libertad, adjacent to the capital and less than five minutes from central park of this city.

This park is home to more than 3,500 species of native and exotic plants from around the world. Its 38 hectares are in constant supervision and research. All visitors begin their journey at the forest area, thru natural springs and surrounded by impressive greenery.

There are three pools decorated with colorful lilies and where you can see tilapia and the endangered “crocodile fish” considered a living fossil.

While navigating the trails you will appreciate the sound and beauty of exotic birds such as “chiltotas”, torogoces (El Salvador’s national bird), hummingbirds and parrots and you will be able to see reptiles like little lizards and iguanas, and small mammals like squirrels and the Central American agouti.

If you want to do extra research, La Laguna Botanical Garden has a library and herbarium where you can ask questions. You can purchase books by the La Laguna Botanical Garden Association or you can buy ornamental fish and gifts at affordable prices that help the organization run the site.

It should be noted that all visitors can buy plants and garden accessories in the nursery of the Association adjacent to the Botanical Garden.

Where to eat

La Laguna Botanical Garden has a cafeteria where you can lunch at affordable prices (from $ 0.90 to $ 2). There are a variety of natural soda beverages like sodas and snacks to accompany them. In the afternoons on Saturdays and Sundays, you can taste typical dishes.

How to get there

Bus routes 44, 42-A and 44 (coaster bus.) The bus stop is within the Industrial Zone at “Plan de La Laguna. By car you can easily ask direction from of Antiguo Cuscatlan the central park.

– Library:

Wednesday –Friday: from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Monday- Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (By appointment)

They also provide extra services such as decoration and maintenance of gardens and convention center (100 people capacity)
