Cradle of some of El Salvador’s most influential citizens and department filled with beaches and cities bursting with tradition. La Paz is located in the central zone of the country, and waits for you with open arms!

Its name in Nahuat translates to “the den of little fishes”, due to the many (and popular!) water springs, such as the Ichanmichen Aquatic Park. Its capital city is Zacatecoluca and its people are known as virolenos.

Its peppered with gorgeous black volcanic sand beaches, which are always a hit with tourists and locals alike. One of its most famous beaches is La Costa del Sol, located comfortably close to the El Salvador International Airport – San Oscar Arnulfo Romero and Galdamez, which happens to be located in the same department.

The airport is the starting point to visit many wonderful and distinct tourism hotspots, such as the pineapple farms in Santa Maria Ostuma, where year after year celebrates its Pineapple Festival. A necessary stop is the town of Olocuilta, better known for its delicious rice flour pupusas. If you visit Olocuilta on the second sunday of each november, you’re in for a treat as they celebrate the National Pupusa Day.

La Paz has kept and honored many of its traditional festivities, such as the Patron Saint Feast in honor of the Virgin of Asunicion, which take place from August 15 to August 18 every year, the Dance of the Tiger and the Deer, the Bulls of Asencion and the Crosses of Santa Cruz.

Another of its most picturesque destinations, for locals and foreigners alike, is the Jaltepeque Estuary, where once per year the International Marlin Fishing Tournament is hosted. This event counts with the salvadoran, american, costa rican and guatemalan participants, among others.

Impressive river and rocky formations also form part of the natural scenic beauty of this department, such as the ones in San Antonio Msahuat (only 20 minutes away from the Panoramic Route), which boasts beautiful vistas of the Ilopango Lake, San Vicente Volcano and San Salvador Volcano. There are many lookout points, restaurants and greenhouses waiting for you in this area.

As you can see, La Paz counts with great tourism development, with hotels for any budget. As for its gastronomy, you’ll be delighted with its varied and ample menu, different in any place you chose!
