A jewel of nature that can become a dream for many surfers. Mostly right-breaking waves of great power and beauty define the prestige of the waves of the country, which have been chosen on several occasions as the host of world surfing competitions.

A brief guide of seven beaches where you can find your perfect wave follows.

1. The wave of Punta Roca or "La Punta"

As local surfers call it. Breaks right over bedrock and is considered by experts as one of the top 10 places in the world for surfing. In fact, professional surfers who ride it compare it to the famous Jeffreys Bay waves in South Africa. The added appeal of its warm water makes it unnecessary to wear wetsuits.

2. El Tunco

The highest-quality wave is La Bocana. A natural left, uncommon on a coast of right waves, formed by the rocky bottom of the mouth of the Rio Grande. It is a powerful breaker that holds waves up to 10 feet (3.5 meters) of height, thick and heavy lips, long and sometimes tubular. Suitable only for advanced and expert surfers and with the characteristics of breaking consistently almost all year round.

3. El Sunzal

Almost surely the beach where surfing was practiced for the first time in El Salvador. Since the first North American surfers arrived in the late sixties, this very long point of right waves that break all year round has been the favorite of locals and foreigners. Its great area can accommodate dozens of surfers at the same time. El Sunzal is the breaker that supports without closing the largest waves of the entire Salvadoran coast.

4. El Zonte

Known as the country's most bohemian beach destination, regular visitors call it the "Loko Village." It has two main surf spots separated by a river, with an inlet generating 5-star waves of long distance to the right. To the left, skate-style great quality waves are also generated for surfers. This wave is suitable for advanced and expert surfers for its power and speed.

5. El Cocal

Between March and September, this location can generate waves up to 10 feet (3.5 meters) of height, long lines, wide, steep walls, and tubular sections dying on the long volcanic sand beach located to the East. At these times, it becomes a powerful and demanding wave, suitable for experts.

6. La Paz

In the sixties, it was historically the second surfed wave in El Salvador, known as the wave of La Libertad. Before Punta Roca's waves were discovered on the side.

It is a long-distance wave. It has fast and slow sections, ideal for beginners, hobbyists, and amateurs. It is a panoramic wave that runs along the boardwalk and can be enjoyed by visiting any establishment in the area.

7. Mizata

The beach is divided in two by a breakwater: on one side is a sandy beach whose length is approximately one kilometer, and the other is exclusively for surfing. At this beach, surfing becomes its main attraction due to the perfect formation of its waves and its privacy to spend a peaceful day. The extreme tranquility of Mizata is the ideal place for resting.

8. Acajutla

Acajutla's section has two beaches ideal for surfing: The old pier beach convenient for bodyboarding and bodysurfing and the left-wave Punta Negreii.

The beach is directed more to the East than to the South. The summer swell is more exponential during that time.

9. Las Flores, San Miguel

During December and January, this beach offers gentle waves suitable for beginners and intermediates, and when the tides from the South Pacific Ocean arrive, especially between March and October, you must psych yourself, since this spot produces waves of up to 12 feet high (4 meters) with long and steep lines, that move quickly over a semi-rocky bottom until they merge with the volcanic gray sand of its shore.

10. Punta Mango

Punta Mango is a mythical beach located in the eastern part of the department of Usulután. Recently known only by a lucky few locals, it is now on the wish list of any adventurous surfer. The Punta Mango wave is one of the most demanding on the entire Salvadoran coast. Reserved only for experts on their best days. This rocky spot breaks to the right, creating an impressive, fast, tunnel, long-line wave which continues until winding its way down in a sandy inlet.
